Vertical Tasting with Andrew Nalle at The Friend

Continuing our exploration of back vintages from local wineries, we are incredibly excited to welcome Andrew Nalle from Nalle Winery in Dry Creek Valley as we taste through a vertical lineup of their zinfandels going back to the late 80s.  We have long believed that well-made zinfandel not only can age well, but shows best with significant time in bottle.  The Nalle zins are no exception, and in fact their zins are quite unique for the area; they’ve been making lower alcohol, crisp versions of zinfandel since their inception in 1984.  Never wavering with the changing tastes of the era, the wines have always been delicate, aromatic, and subtle, in contrast to the more powerful wines of their neighbors.

The history of the family in the area goes back even further than 1984.  Doug Nalle and Lee Henderlong married in 1974, with the Henderlong family having history in Sonoma county going back to the 1890s, when they had a sheep ranch on land that is now under Lake Sonoma water.  The family acquired the current property in Dry Creek in 1927 and planted zinfandel.  With winery experience already under his belt, Doug had an interest in crafting his own wines from the family property, founding the Nalle label in the process.

We have been sourcing and featuring library Nalle zinfandels for years, plucking them out of collectors’ cellars when we find them.  They age beautifully, often tasting very much like old pinot noir, with spice and herb notes coming through the tangy fruit.  These tastings are a one off opportunity, get one of the limited tickets quickly.
